The war has scarcely touched Otterbury, apart from one bomb which destroyed a few buildings near the centre, the site now known locally as "the incident" of the book's title. This is used for war-games by rival gangs from the local King's School.

The Otterbury Incident is set in the fictionalized town of Otterbury, just after the end of the Second World War, probably around 1948 or so. The town largely survived the German bombings, except for one stray bomb that knocked down a few buildings.
