Stanford: Violin concerto; Suite. Dan Davis. Artistic Quality: 10. Sound Quality: 10. Hyperion has brought together two fetching, large-scale pieces by Charles Villiers Stanford for its “The Romantic Violin” series.

The Stanfords spent their summer holiday travelling in Europe: they were in Bayreuth in the first part of August
And this CD adds to that picture: it’s disconcerting to hear so many pre-echoes of Elgar’s Violin Concerto in the first movement of the Suite, even though there are plenty of sideways glances at Brahms, still very much alive when the work was written in 1888.
Maybe it was the chance to rehear this first concerto which inspired Stanford to write a Second in 1918, followed by a set of Variations in 1921 and the Sixth Irish Rhapsody in 1922 (recorded by Lydia Mordkovich on Chandos).
