Ágúst Ævar Gunnarsson (Icelandic pronunciation: [ˈaːuɣust ˈaːivar ˈkʏnːarsɔn]; born 22 September 1976) is a founding member of the Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós. He was the band's drummer from their creation in August 1994 [1] until he quit in 1999 after the band finished Ágætis byrjun .

Jón Þór "Jónsi" Birgisson (guitar and vocals), Georg Hólm (bass) and Ágúst Ævar Gunnarsson (drums) formed Sigur Rós in Reykjavík in January 1994. The band's name, which means "Victory Rose", is taken from the name of Jónsi's younger sister, Sigurrós, born a few days before the band was formed.
Ágætis byrjun is the band's first album to feature keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson, and their last to feature drummer Ágúst Ævar Gunnarsson, who left the band several months after the album was released. Gunnarsson was replaced by Orri Páll Dýrason in the same year.
Jón Þór "Jónsi" Birgisson (guitar and vocals), Georg Holm (bass) and Ágúst Ævar Gunnarsson (drums) formed the group in Reykjavík in January 1994. Ágúst Ævar Gunnarsson retired after the release of the second album to be replaced by Orri Páll Dýrason. The band was joined by Kjartan Sveinsson on keyboards in 1998.
Converging on the island’s capital of Reykjavik, guitarist/vocalist Birgisson, bassist Georg Hólm, and drummer Ágúst Ævar Gunnarsson soon won the affections of the local Sugarcubes-operated label Bad Taste – whom somewhat näively assumed Birgisson’s cherubic falsetto would cement the band as teenage heartthrobs.
