    Joseph Goldmark (1818-1881), Hungarian-born physician whose hobby was chemistry, came to America in 1849, shortly after presenting his discovery of red phosphorous to the Convention of Hungarian Physicians and Naturalists. A revolutionist in his youth, his political opinions forced Goldmark to leave his country with Louis Kossuth.
