Laurence Bruce of Cultmalindie (20 January 1547 – August 1617) was a Scottish landowner and factor to the Earl of Orkney. He features in a number of traditional stories of Shetland. [1] Background. He was the son of John Bruce of Cultmalindie and Euphemia Elphinstone. [2] .

Muness Castle was built in 1598 for the half-brother of Robert Stewart, Laurence Bruce of Cultmalindie. When Robert Stewart was imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle for misusing Shetland laird’s taxes and lands, his son became Earl Patrick Stewart and commanded that Andrew Crawford build the Z-plan tower house on the isle of Unst.

Laurence, originally from southern Scotland, thought the Scandinavians in Shetland were ‘lesser people’, and had no qualms in exploiting them to their fullest potential.
Laurence Bruce was appointed Sheriff of Shetland and set to work with a corrupt and cruel enthusiasm that was characteristic of the family. When Robert Stewart was succeeded by his son Patrick, Laurence Bruce felt threatened by the change.
