Al's brother, John Christian (Chris) Staehely, auditioned for the band and was quickly brought on board, departing the Texas rock group Krackerjack. The Staehelys, Cassidy and Locke recorded the 1972 album Feedback in Columbia/Epic's Hollywood studios.

22 de nov. de 2021 · The band's final Epic LP, 1972's Feedback, lacked the participation of California, Ferguson, and Andes, with Cassidy and Locke joined by new members Al and Chris Staehely. In 1974, after briefly touring with an entirely new line-up, Cassidy re-established contact with his stepson, and Spirit was reborn.

Al Staehely is a typical rock singer, competent but conservative, and the loss of Ferguson simply accentuates the blues-driven tempo of this track even more. Locke’s piano is the only thing that sounds even remotely like the older Sprit music, but he gets kind of buried in the mix and doesn’t do much to improve this song.

Feedback was the only Spirit album to feature John and Al Staehely as band members. Musically it was a different turn for the band, in favor of a country influenced hard rock style and lyrics mostly dealing with conventional male-female love topics, with only the tracks "Darkness" and the instrumentals "Puesta Del Scam" and "Trancas ...
