On November 6, 1863, Federal forces under William Averell defeated Confederates under the command of J ohn Echols at the Battle of Droop Mountain, ending organized Southern resistance in West Virginia. The engagement was one of the largest and last major battles in West Virginia.

Echols arrived at Droop Mountain at about 9 a.m. on November 6 with fewer than 1,000 men. The additional troops brought the combined Confederate strength at Droop Mountain to about 1,700 soldiers.
