Patrick Sarsfield, 1st Earl of Lucan (c. 1655 – 21 August 1693) was an Irish soldier and Jacobite. Killed at Landen in 1693 while serving in the French army , he is now best remembered as an Irish patriot and military hero.

Patrick Sarsfield (born, Lucan, County Dublin, Ire.—died August 1693, Huy, Austrian Netherlands) was a Jacobite soldier who played a leading role in the Irish Roman Catholic resistance (1689–91) to England’s King William III. Sarsfield remains a favourite hero of the Irish national tradition.

In 1689 James ll came out of exile into Ireland and along with him was Patrick Sarsfield. It is recorded that Sarsfield in command of a force of 500 men operating around Lough Erne and Ballyshannon had suffered defeats at the hands of Williamite forces from Enniskillen.
