Educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, Petty-Fitzmaurice was a Major in the Royal Scots Greys, and formerly 2nd Lieutenant in the Scottish Horse (Territorial Army). He served in WWII, receiving the Legion of Honour and Croix de Guerre of France.
