  1. Alphonso Taft (November 5, 1810 – May 21, 1891) was an American jurist, diplomat, politician, Attorney General and Secretary of War under President Ulysses S. Grant. He was also the founder of the Taft political dynasty, and father of President and Chief Justice William Howard Taft.

  5. Alphonso Taft was born in 1810 in Townshend, Vermont. He graduated with honors from Yale College, studied law, and was admitted to the Connecticut bar in 1838. He then moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he established a successful law practice.

  7. 15 de feb. de 2017 · Alphonso would hold that position until 1872 when he resigned. In 1876, he would be tapped by then-President Ulysseus Grant to become the Secretary of War. His tenure of Secretary of War was short-lived as he moved on to become Attorney General of the U.S. just a few months later.
