Barnaby Rudge was one of two novels (the other was The Old Curiosity Shop ) that Dickens published in his short-lived (1840–1841) weekly serial Master Humphrey's Clock .

Barnaby Rudge was Dickens’s first attempt at a historical novel. It is set in the late 18th century and presents with great vigour and understanding (and some ambivalence of attitude) the spectacle of large-scale mob violence.
