  6. The sitter was the Governor of the Presidency of Bombay in British India from 1890 to 1895. In May of 1895, by way of Queen Victoria's Birthday Honours List, Harris was appointed a Knight Grand Commander of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India, the regalia of which he wears in this portrait. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1897.
