Perteneció al equipo de la Copa Davis de los Estados Unidos en 1991 y 1992. En 1994 fue el primer jugador que sin ser cabeza de serie llegaba a la final del Abierto de Estados Unidos desde 1971 y el primer estadounidense en ganarlo desde 1966, al vencer al alemán Michael Stich.
