He is the only son and the eldest of the four children of Heinrich IV, Prince Reuss of Köstritz (1919 – 2012) and Marie Luise, Princess of Salm-Horstmar (1918 – 2015).
When Prince Heinrich Reuß zu Köstritz was born on 28 July 1919, in Wrocław, Lower Silesia, Poland, his father, Prinz Heinrich XXXIV von Reuss, was 32 and his mother, Prinzessin Sophie Renata Reuss zu Köstritz, was 35. He married Franziska Mayr von Melnhof on 13 March 1944, in Frohnleiten, Graz Umgebung, Styria, Austria.
