Joseph Francis Biroc, ASC (February 12, 1903 – September 7, 1996) was an American cinematographer. He was born in New York City and began working in films at the Paragon Studios in Fort Lee, New Jersey. After working there for approximately six years, he moved to Los Angeles.
Camera and Electrical Department: The Towering Inferno. Joseph Biroc was destined to become one of the most versatile cinematographers in Hollywood, working on films of almost every genre. He started as a lab assistant in 1918, based at Paragon Studio, located in America's first 'film capital', Ft.Lee, New Jersey.

Born in New York on 12 February 1903, Joseph Biroc began working in Paragon Studios’ labs at the age of 15, in Fort Lee, New Jersey (then the cradle of American cinema), and continued his apprenticeship for six years in various laboratories, which was then a mandatory step for apprentice cinematographers.
Joseph F. Biroc is known as an Director of Photography, Camera Operator, Cinematography, Actor, and Additional Photography. Some of his work includes Airplane!, It's a Wonderful Life, Blazing Saddles, Airplane II: The Sequel, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, The Towering Inferno, The Flight of the Phoenix, and The Longest Yard.
