The story's eponymous heroine is Amy Dorrit, called Little Dorrit because of her diminutive size and meek personality. William Dorrit, her father, is an inmate of the Marshalsea debtors' prison, where he has resided so long that he's known as the Father of the Marshalsea, a title in which he takes great pride.
