Ambrose Akinmusire ( / ˌækɪnˈmuːsəri / [1] born May 1, 1982) is an American avant-garde jazz composer and trumpeter. [2] [3] Biography. Born and raised in Oakland, California, Akinmusire was a member of the Berkeley High School Jazz Ensemble, where he caught the attention of saxophonist Steve Coleman who was visiting the school to lead a workshop.
Composer and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire has just released his Nonesuch Records debut, Owl Song. The album, featuring a trio with two musicians Akinmusire has long admired, guitarist Bill Frisell and drummer Herlin Riley, has landed on the New York Times’ list of Best Jazz Albums of 2023 as well as on Jazzwise’s Albums of the Year list, where it is called “starkly beautiful music.”
