George Emanuel Lewis (born July 14, 1952) is an American composer, performer, and scholar of experimental music. [1] . He has been a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians ( AACM) since 1971, when he joined the organization at the age of 19. [2] .

He graduated from the University of Chicago Laboratory School in 1969, and went on to receive his B.A. degree in philosophy from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut in 1974.
