  3. Biography. Following the death of his rakish elder brother in September 1688, Spencer became heir to the 2nd Earl of Sunderland, one of the most adept politicians of the age. Styled Lord Spencer, he was too young to be tainted with his father’s (and elder brother’s) conversion to Rome in 1687.
