Hillel Kook (1915–2001) was born in Lithuania in 1915 and moved with his family to Palestine in 1925. He became a militant Zionist and adopted the pseudonym Peter H. Bergson to avoid embarrassing his family, which included a prominent rabbi.
Peter H. Bergson was born Hillel Kook in Lithuania in 1915. Bergson was a nephew of Ashkenazi chief rabbi Abraham Isaac Hacohen Kook. At the age of 10 immigrated to Eretz Israel, with his family. In 1929, he joined the Haganah, and when the Irgun (IZL) was founded, he left the Haganah and joined the new organization.
Hillel Kook. He joined the Herut Party and served in the Knesset (Parliament). Disappointed in the new state’s governance and attitudes, he left both Israeli politics and Israel in 1951, returning to the United States for nearly two decades. In 1968 he returned to Israel, settling for good in 1970, and lived in Tel Aviv until his death in 2001.
