Elizabeth’s marriage wasn’t a particularly happy one, but she was quite close to her famous father-in-law, the 1st Duke. She was also a fixture at the court of Queen Victoria, serving as Mistress of the Robes from 1861-1868 and then again from 1874-1880.

  7. Became Duchess of Wellington on her husband's accession in 1852 and was appointed Mistress of the Robes in 1861, continuing as such under Lords Palmerston, Russell, Derby and Disraeli, until 1880,…. except from 1868-1874. Survived her husband by exactly twenty years.
