William FitzWilliam, 1st Earl of Southampton, KG (c. 1490 – 15 October 1542) was an English courtier and soldier. He was the third son of Sir Thomas FitzWilliam of Aldwark and Lady Lucy Neville, daughter of John Neville, 1st Marquess of Montagu.
William Fitzwilliam, earl of Southampton was an English admiral during the reign of Henry VIII. A son of Sir William Fitzwilliam of Aldwarke, near Rotherham, Fitzwilliam was a companion in boyhood of Henry VIII and was knighted for his services at the siege of Tournai in 1513.

19 de abr. de 2002 · Fitzwilliam held various official posts: ambassador to France, Lord Privy Seal and Lord High Admiral. He was created Earl of Southampton in 1537, and married Mabel Clifford, sister of the 1st Earl of Cumberland.

15 de oct. de 2023 · On this day in Tudor history, 15th October 1542, in the reign of King Henry VIII, courtier, diplomat and naval commander William Fitzwilliam, Earl of Southampton, died in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
He had taken his own first steps in diplomacy in 1518, accompanying the embassy to France headed by Charles Somerset, 1st Earl of Worcester, and Nicholas West, Bishop of Ely. In Jan 1521 he replaced Sir Richard Jerningham as resident Ambassador there.
It was this Sir William Fitzwilliam, later Earl of Southampton, who first employed his young namesake and who by 1536 considered him a trusted servant and secretary.
Earl of Southampton was a title that was created three times in the Peerage of England. Its first creation came in 1537 in favour of the courtier William FitzWilliam . He was childless and the title became extinct on his death in 1542.
