James Hubert Ramsay, 17th Earl of Dalhousie, GCVO, DL (born 17 January 1948), styled Lord Ramsay between 1950 and 1999, is a Scottish peer, courtier and landowner. He is chief of Clan Ramsay and Deputy Captain General of the King's Body Guard for Scotland.
He was the father of 1) William Ramsay (1804–1871), a major-general in the Bengal Army; 2) the twelfth Earl (see above); 3) James Ramsay (1808–1868), a major-general in the Bengal Army; and 4) the Hon. Sir Henry Ramsay (1816–1893), a general in the Bengal Army, whose grandson was the politician Archibald Maule Ramsay.
George Ramsay, 9th Earl of Dalhousie was Governor General of British North America from 1819 to 1828. He was also commander-in-chief of India from 1829 to 1832. His son was James Broun-Ramsay, 1st Marquess of Dalhousie who also served as Governor General of India, from 1847 to 1856.
The area between the keep and the curtain wall was 昀椀rst built up by the 1st Earl of Dalhousie in the early 17th century. The castle closely resembles nearby Dirleton Castle which is now in ruins. Originally access to the castle was obtained by crossing a drawbridge over a deep dry moat.
