When Thomas Grey 2nd Marquess of Dorset was born on 22 June 1477, in Bashall Eaves, Yorkshire, England, his father, Sir Thomas Grey 1st Marquess of Dorset, was 22 and his mother, Cecily Bonville 7th Baroness Harington, was 16. He married Margaret Wotton Marchioness of Dorset on 6 January 1509.

His paternal grandparents were Sir John Grey of Groby, Leicestershire, and Elizabeth Woodville, who went on to marry Edward IV after Sir John Grey's death.
