John Adrian Louis Hope, 1st Marquess of Linlithgow, 7th Earl of Hopetoun, KT, GCMG, GCVO, PC (25 September 1860 – 29 February 1908) was a British aristocrat and statesman who served as the first governor-general of Australia, in office from 1901 to 1902.
Marquess of Linlithgow, in the County of Linlithgow or West Lothian, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 23 October 1902 for John Hope, 7th Earl of Hopetoun. [1] The current holder of the title is Adrian Hope .
John Adrian Louis Hope, 1st Marquess of Linlithgow KT, GCMG, GCVO, PC (25 September 1860 - 29 February 1908), known as Viscount Aithrie before 1873 and as The 7th Earl of Hopetoun between 1873 and 1902, was the first Governor-General of Australia.
The 7th Earl, John (1860-1908), however, was to become one of the most eminent members of the family and was created the 1st Marquess of Linlithgow. After serving as Governor of Victoria, Australia at the age of 29, he returned to Britain to become Queen Victoria’s Lord Chamberlain.

HOPETOUN, JOHN ADRIAN LOUIS HOPE, 7th Earl (1860–1908), governor-general, later 1st Marquess of Linlithgow, was born on 25 September 1860 at Hopetoun House, South Queensferry, Scotland, eldest son of John Alexander Hope, sixth earl, and his wife Ethelred Anne Birch, née Reynardson.
