The Gooch Baronetcy of Benacre Hall, in the County of Suffolk, [2] was created in the Baronetage of Great Britain on 4 November 1746 for William Gooch, [3] Lieutenant Governor of Virginia from 1727 to 1749. The second Baronet was Bishop of Bristol, Norwich then Ely.

Gooch, Sir William go͞och [ key], 1681–1751, colonial governor of Virginia (1727–49), b. Yarmouth, England. He came to Virginia after distinguished service with the British army. Nominally, Gooch was only lieutenant governor, but he was in fact the real chief executive in the colony for 22 years.

Sir William Gooch was appointed the lieutenant governor of Virginia (1727-1749) after a successful military career in the British Army. He returned to England in 1749. According to a questionable family history, this portrait of Gooch descended to his son, William Gooch, Jr. who settled in Virginia and married Eleanor Bowles of Maryland.
