He was created 1st Baron Ashcombe, of Dorking, Surrey and of Bodiam Castle, Sussex on 22 August 1892. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Surrey and Middlesex. He was Honorary Colonel of the 5th Battalion, Royal West Surrey Regiment.
