Sir George Houston Reid GCB GCMG PC KC (25 February 1845 – 12 September 1918) was an Australian and British politician, diplomat and barrister who served as the fourth prime minister of Australia, from 1904 to 1905, holding office as the leader of the Free Trade Party.
George Reid was prime minister for 10 months and 17 days. He was Australia’s first federal Leader of the Opposition and the federal government’s first High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

Sir George Houstoun Reid (1845-1918), premier, prime minister and high commissioner, was born on 25 February 1845 at Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland, youngest of five sons of Rev. John Reid (d.1867), Presbyterian minister, and his wife Marion (d.1885), née Crybbace.

George Reid became Australia’s fourth prime minister when the Liberal Free Trade Party formed an alliance with the Liberal Protection Party, removing the minority Watson Labour Government from office.
First elected to the new Commonwealth Parliament for the Division of East Sydney in March 1901, Reid was Prime Minister and Minister for External Affairs between August 1904 and July 1905, and also had two periods as Opposition Leader (May 1901–August 1904 and July 1905–November 1908).
