Admiral Sir Ernest Charles Thomas Troubridge, KCMG, CB, MVO (15 July 1862 – 28 January 1926) was an officer of the Royal Navy who served during the First World War. Troubridge was born into a family with substantial military connections, with several of his forebears being distinguished naval officers.

The British light cruiser Gloucester, guarding the southern Strait of Messina, had reported Goeben’s departure from Messina and was shadowing the battlecruiser.

The initial British detachment consisted of a single individual, Rear-Admiral Sir Ernest Troubridge. This out-of-the-way assignment was First Lord Churchill’s “reward” for Troubridge following court-martial acquittal for negligence in declining an earlier opportunity to attack a German battle-cruiser.
