Lieutenant-General Charles Butler, 1st Earl of Arran (of the second creation), de jure 3rd Duke of Ormonde (1671–1758) was an Anglo-Irish peer. His uncle Richard was the 1st Earl of Arran of the first creation. The titles were re-created for Charles in 1693.

Charles Butler, 1st Earl of Arran (1671–1758) was the third successive head of the Butler family to be Chancellor of Oxford and held the post for longer than anyone either before or after him from 1715 but has barely been noticed by posterity except as a ‘Jacobite’.

Biography. Lt.-Gen. Charles Butler, 1st Earl of Arran was born on 29 August 1671.1 He was the son of Thomas Butler, 6th Earl of Ossory and Lady Amelia de Nassau. His father's family, the Butler dynasty, was Old English and descended from Theobald Walter, who had been appointed Chief Butler of Ireland by King Henry II in 1177.
Charles Butler was born on 4th Sep 1671, and died on 17th Dec 1758. His title of 1st Earl of Arran was a second creation. He was 26 when, in 1697, he was appointed colonel of the regiment of horse that became the 5th Dragoon Guards.
