Chief Mkwavinyika Munyigumba Mwamuyinga (c. 1855 – 19 July 1898), more commonly known as Chief Mkwawa or Sultan Mkwawa, was a Hehe tribal leader in German East Africa, based in Kalenga, Iringa region, who opposed the German colonization.

When Chief Mkwawa of the Hehe sensed that his capture by the German colonial troops was imminent, he committed suicide in order not to surrender to the enemy. For seven years Mkwawa had resisted German rule in the Southern Highlands.
Mkwawa’s head was a symbolic object, severed under systems of violence implicit in empire making. The transition of human remains from a trophy head to a specimen skull documents the weaponisation of anthropology for imperial control.
