John Chard. Colonel John Rouse Merriott Chard VC (21 December 1847 – 1 November 1897) was a British Army officer who received the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valour "in the face of the enemy" that can be awarded to members of the British armed forces.

5 de dic. de 2018 · John Chard commanded the defence. Chard was a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers. He had been dispatched from the Isandlwana column to build a bridge over the Buffalo River. Upon hearing that a large Zulu army was approaching, he took command of the Rorke’s Drift garrison, supported by Bromhead and Assistant Commissary James Dalton.

Lieutenant John Chard, Royal Engineers, arrived at Rorke’s Drift on 19 th January 1879, with a party of sappers. Chard had cause to journey up to Isandlwana immediately before the battle and on his return, saw groups of Zulus. On 22 nd January 1879, the garrison heard firing from the distant battle and a group of officers climbed the nearby hill.
Lieutenant John Chard commanded part of No 5 Field Company, Royal Engineers. There were also a few Natal colonial troops at Rorke’s Drift The British garrison at Rorke's Drift consisted of only 150 men.

John Chard, the officer commanding, remarked in admiration of the Zulu that he was “glad to say the plucky fellow got off.” It was Jan. 23, 1879, and the epic defence of Rorke’s Drift had just ended. Although a minor action in a far-off colonial war, it is one of the most famous battles in British military history.
