Dorothy Payne Elmhirst (née Whitney; January 23, 1887 – December 14, 1968) was an American-born social activist, philanthropist, publisher and a member of the prominent Whitney family.

Dorothy Elmhirst Straight (born May 25, 1958, in Washington, D.C.) is an American author who wrote How the World Began in 1962 at the age of 4 for her grandmother, Dorothy Payne Whitney, making her among the youngest published authors in history.
Dorothy Payne Whitney, daughter of William C. Whitney, a financier and secretary of the Navy under President Grover Cleveland, married Willard Dickerman Straight in 1911. Straight died in 1919, and she married Leonard Knight Elmhirst in 1925.
