On 5 January 1943 Montenegrin Chetniks, commanded by Pavle Đurišić, attacked 33 villages predominantly populated with Muslims in the region of Lower Bihor. They pursued raids of revenge against Sandžak Muslims, many being innocent villagers, with the goal of settling accounts with Muslim militias.

Among the former, one should mention Ilija Trifunović Birčanin, Pavle Đurišić (Павле Ђуришић), Jezdimir Dangić (Јездимир Дангић), Father Momčilo Đujić (поп Момчило Ђујић), Dobroslav Jevđević (Доброслав Јевђевић), and Nikola Kalabić (Никола Калабић), among others.
He was joined there in late 1944 by Chetniks from Sandžak and, in early 1945, by several thousand Chetniks from Montenegro led by Pavle Đurišić. Unlike Mihailović, who decided to return to Serbia, Đurišić headed west.
