Benjamin Jesty by Michael William Sharp, 1805. Benjamin Jesty (c. 1736 – 16 April 1816) was a farmer at Yetminster in Dorset, England, notable for his early experiment in inducing immunity against smallpox using cowpox .
Si bien Jenner ha recibido todo el mérito de la comunidad científica por el descubrimiento de la vacuna antivariólica, existen antecedentes de inoculación antes de las investigaciones de Jenner. En la lápida funeraria de Benjamin Jesty se puede leer “…partió de esta vida el 16 de abril 1816 a la edad de 79 años.

In 1774, Benjamin Jesty makes a breakthrough. Testing his hypothesis that infection with cowpox – a bovine virus which can spread to humans – could protect a person from smallpox Dr Edward Jenner created the world's first successful vaccine.
