General Sir James Hockenhull in Washington, D.C. in 2023. In April 2022, it was announced that Hockenhull would be promoted to general and succeed General Sir Patrick Sanders as the commander of United Kingdom Strategic Command. He took office in May 2022.

Jim Hockenhull was educated at the Royal Hospital School and commissioned into the Intelligence Corps in 1986 after reading Politics at the University of York on a University Cadetship. His subsequent education includes a MA from Cranfield University and a Visiting Fellowship at Pembroke College, Oxford.
In addition to his career as a professional intelligence officer he has worked in a variety of strategic planning roles. He has also served as an exchange officer with the US Army at Leavenworth and Monterrey and on secondment with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Strategic Command develops and coordinates joint capabilities for UK Defence such as medical services, intelligence, support and logistics, digital and communication systems, cyber, special forces, training and education, and our overseas bases. We also manages overseas military operations through the Permanent Joint Headquarters.
