  1. Engel de Ruyter. Engel Michielszoon de Ruyter (2 May 1649 – 27 February 1683) was a Dutch vice-admiral. Biography. De Ruyter was born in Vlissingen, the son of lieutenant admiral Michiel de Ruyter and his second wife Cornelia (Neeltje) Engels. He began his naval service on board his father's ship during his expeditions in 1664 and 1665.

The gilt frame of the painting is original. It is richly decorated with attributes that refer to the navy.
