Mary Lillian Duke Biddle (November 16, 1887 – June 14, 1960) was an American philanthropist. [1] Early life. She was born as Mary Lillian Duke on November 16, 1887, to Benjamin Newton Duke in Durham, North Carolina. She attended Durham's Trinity College, the institutional predecessor of Duke University, which was named in honor of her family.
Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans (February 21, 1920 – January 25, 2012) was an American heiress, activist, politician, and philanthropist. She was the granddaughter of Benjamin N. Duke and the great-granddaughter of Washington Duke, both tobacco and energy tycoons who helped start Duke University.

25 de ene. de 2012 · 1920-2012. Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans, a member of the Duke family, was born Mary Duke Biddle in 1920. She enrolled in Duke University at the age of 15 in 1936. In 1939, she married Josiah Charles Trent, a medical student at Duke and later a Surgeon on the Duke faculty. They had four children before Dr. Trent died of lymphoma in 1948.
In 1953, Mary Duke Biddle Trent married Dr. James Semans, a urologist at Duke, and together they had three children. Semans served the Duke and Durham communities in a myriad of ways. She served as mayor pro tem of Durham from 1953 to 1955 and was a trustee of Lincoln Community Hospital, a hospital created during segregation for African-American patients in Durham, from 1948 to 1976.
