  1. General John Hope, 4th Earl of Hopetoun, GCB, PC (Ire), FRSE (17 August 1765 – 27 August 1823), known as The Honourable John Hope from 1781 to 1814 and as Lord Niddry from 1814 to 1816, was a Scottish politician and British Army officer.

  2. By the time of James the 3rd Earl (1741-1816) the family owned large areas of land in East and West Lothian, Fife and Lanarkshire. However, as James had no son, he was succeeded by his half-brother General Sir John Hope (1765-1823) as 4th Earl. The 4th Earl had a distinguished military career.

  3. John Hope was born on 17 Aug 1765 at Abercorn. He was the only son of John Hope, 2nd Earl of Hopetoun, by his second wife Jane Oliphant. His mother died when he was aged one. He was commissioned as Cornet Hon John Hope into the 10th Light Dragoons in 1784 but left that regiment soon after.

  4. John Hope of Hopetoun was baptised in the parish of Edinburgh, Midlothian on 16 June 1650. He was the son of Sir James Hope and Anne Foulis. He married Lady Margaret Hamilton, daughter of John Hamilton, 4th Earl of Haddington and Lady Christian Lindsay, on 31 December 1668 at Tynninghame, East Lothian.
