Johann von Staupitz OSA (c. 1460 – 28 December 1524) was a German Catholic priest and theologian, university preacher, and Vicar General of the Augustinian friars in Germany, who supervised Martin Luther during a critical period in his spiritual life.

Johann von Staupitz. During his time as Luther’s supervisor in the Augustinian order, Johann von Staupitz had a direct influence upon his spiritual and theological development and Luther later attributed much to his former monastic superior.

Johann von Staupitz was the Augustinian superior and mentor of Martin Luther. He maintained contact with Martin Luther for the rest of his life, yet without leaving the Catholic Church himself. Staupitz was pious and kindly; in his care of individuals and in the pulpit he succeeded in communicating some of his religious fervour to others.
