Gotthard Kettler, Duke of Courland (also Godert, Ketteler, German: Gotthard Kettler, Herzog von Kurland; 2 February 1517 – 17 May 1587) was the last Master of the Livonian Order and the first Duke of Courland and Semigallia.

Gotthard Kettler, [4] the last Master of the Livonian Order, became the first duke of Courland. Other members of the Order became the Couronian nobility, with the fiefdoms they had hitherto held becoming their estates. In all, Kettler received nearly one-third of the land in the new duchy.
Gotthard Kettler (who himself signed his name in Low German as Godderd) came from a noble Westphalian family. in his youth he joined the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Order, and in 1554 was elected commander of Dünaburg/Daugavpils.
