Mindaugas [nota 1] (aprox. 1200 [1] [2] - otoño de 1263), gobernante de Lituania, considerado el fundador del estado lituano. Mindaugas was a ruler of Lithuania, considered the founder of the Lithuanian state. He was also the first Lithuanian ruler to become a Christian. Mindaugas successfully asserted himself over other leading Lithuanian nobles and tribal chiefs, including his brother and his nephews, in 1236.
Lithuanians managed to preserve their independence largely due to the efforts of Duke Mindaugas, a man of great energy and ability. Mindaugas united all Lithuanians under his rule, forming a large and powerful state.

Mindaugas was the only Lithuanian monarch crowned king with the assent of the Pope and the head of the first catholic Lithuanian state.
