  5. Beatrice della Scala was born into the ruling family of Vicenza and Verona, the daughter of Count Mastino II of Verona. She was called Regina, the Latin word for queen, by her family because of her pride and assertiveness.

  6. The site chosen was the degraded area of the Church of Santa Maria della Scala, so named in honour of Beatrice Regina della Scala, the wife of Bernabò Visconti. The work was completed in just two years – from 1776 to 1778.

  7. The theatre replaced the former opera house of the city, tragically destroyed by a fire in 1776 because of its wooden structure. The new building lies upon the remains of the church Santa Maria della Scala, established in 1381 by one of Visconti’s spouses: Beatrice Regina della Scala.
