Levan (Georgian: ლევანი), also known as Leon (Georgian: ლეონი) (1503–1574), was a Georgian monarch of the Bagrationi dynasty, who reigned as king of Kakheti in eastern Georgia from 1518/1520 to 1574. He presided over the most prosperous and peaceful period in the history of the Kakhetian realm.
Formally under the vassalage of the Safavid dynasty, Levan of Kakheti was desirous to diminish foreign influence over Georgia, stealthily sending Kakhetian detachments to his son-in-law Simon I of Kartli against the Qizilbashes in the 1560s.

Alexander was a son of King Levan of Kakheti by his first wife Tinatin Gurieli. Upon Levan's death in 1574, Alexander secured his succession in a power struggle with his half-brothers – El-Mirza and Kaikhosro – and their party.
The main attraction of the complex, the Gremi Church of the Archangel, is an excellent display of Georgian architecture that was built and painted between 1565-1577, during the reign of King Levan of Kakheti.

Kakheti is an ancient region rich in historical monuments: the residence of King Levan at Gremi, the monastery from the 4th century Nekresi, a complex of the David Gareji monastery caves (6th c), Shuamta monastery (5th-7th cc.), and Alaverdi, built in the 11th c.
