  3. When Sir John Stewart 1st Earl of Lennox was born on 16 October 1425, in Darnley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, his father, Alan Stewart of Darnley, was 19 and his mother, Catherine de Seton, was 15. He had at least 6 sons and 6 daughters with Margaret Montgomery Countess of Lennox.

  4. In 1473 the earldom was reclaimed by Sir John Stewart of Darnley, who was the grandson of Elizabeth Lennox, daughter to Earl Duncan and sister to Countess Isabella. In 1565 his great-great-great-grandson Henry, Lord Darnley married Mary, Queen of Scots.

  5. They had: Sir Alan Stewart of Darnley, from whom descend the Stewart Earls of Lennox, and James VI of Scotland.

  6. John Stewart's marriage has been a source of genealogical confusion. He is recorded as having contracted to marry Margaret Montgomerie, the daughter of Alexander Montgomerie, 1st Lord Montgomerie and Margaret Boyd, by indenture on 15 May 1438, as both parties were under age. She, however, appears to have died young.

He granted a charter to his brother Alexander Stewart of the lands of Dreghorn on 13 May 1450, and also a charter of the lands of Galstoun, which was confirmed 27 June 1452.
