Carl Eckart was Emeritus Professor of Geophysics at Scripps Institute of Oceanography (1948-1973). Other institutional affiliations included the University of California, San Diego, and the University of Chicago. His research interests included underwater acoustics and quantum mechanics.
208 BIOGRAPHICAL MEMOIRS In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Eckart became concerned with the equation of state of seawater. His primary objective was a critical examination of the p-v-T data on seawater, and the construction of a simple but adequate empirical formula for the equation of state.
Carl Eckart was an eminent mathematical physicist. He was a professor at the Univer- sity of Chicago and later at the University of California at San Diego. His earliest well-known achievement was in quantum mechanics where he established unifying re- lationships between the matrix and wave mechanical formulations.
