Sir John Lavery RA RSA RHA (20 March 1856 – 10 January 1941) was an Irish painter best known for his portraits and wartime depictions.

John Lavery was an Irish painter and member of the Glasgow School of Painting best known for his realistic portraits, genre scenes, and landscapes. Lavery’s works maintained a sketch-like quality which emphasized brushstrokes, in a style reminiscent of James Abbot McNeill Whistler.

Sir John Lavery gave 34 of his paintings to the Belfast Museum and Art Gallery (now the Ulster Museum) when it opened. This much-loved collection includes some of his finest portraits, as well as work painted during his time in Morocco, Switzerland and America.
