Sir Thomas de Ercildoun, better remembered as Thomas the Rhymer (fl. c. 1220 – 1298 [1] ), also known as Thomas Learmont or True Thomas, was a Scottish laird and reputed prophet from Earlston (then called "Erceldoune") in the Borders. [2] Thomas' gift of prophecy is linked to his poetic ability.
11 de abr. de 2024 · Thomas The Rhymer (flourished 1220–97) was a Scottish poet and prophet who was likely the author of the metrical romance Sir Tristrem, a version of the widely diffused Tristan legend. The romance was first printed in 1804 by Sir Walter Scott from a manuscript of about 1300.

Thomas the Rhymer. ‘The father of Scottish poets’, as Lives of Scottish Poets (v.3, Thos. Boys, 1822), declared him to be, sometimes known as ‘True Thomas’ or Thomas Lermont, Sir Thomas Rymour de Ercildoun, both knight and semi-mythical figure, has been credited as the writer of a range of poems, dramas, songs and prophesies.
Written 1890. Illustration by Linley Barba. As Thomas lay on Huntly Bank (a place on the descent of the Eildon Hills, which raise their triple crest above the celebrated monastery of Melrose), he saw a lady so extremely beautiful that he imagined she must be the Virgin Mary herself.
