Elisa von der Recke is a figure of historical, cultural, and literary significance. Though most of her works have now vanished into the dust of libraries, during her life as an author, traveler, social luminary, and salonnière, Elisa von der Recke stood at the crossroads of European history and culture.
Elisa von der Recke, born von Medem, descended from a well-established line of landowners with sizeable holdings in Kurland (present-day Lithuania and Latvia). At the death of her mother, the young Elisa was entrusted to her stern and zealously religious grandmother, whose prime concern was the cultivation of the young girl's beauty and manners.
