Gaspard, Baron Gourgaud (14 September 1783 – 25 July 1852), also known simply as Gaspard Gourgaud, was a French soldier, prominent in the Napoleonic wars. Biography. He was born at Versailles; his father was a musician of the royal chapel. At school he showed talent in mathematical studies and later joined the artillery.

Napoleon confronted General Moreau and defeated him there on 26th August, 1813. As a result, Napoleon awarded Gourgaud the status of “Officer” in the Legion of Honor and an annual stipend of 6,000 Livres for life. After the battle of Leipzig, Gourgaud was ordered to destroy the bridge at Freyberg.
Gourgaud was the one to tell Napoleon of Murat's betrayal. Just like all the other ordnance officers, Gourgaud was admitted to Louis XVIII's Gardes du corps and received the cross of Saint-Louis what's more. He was subsequently appointed chief of staff of the artillery of the 1st military division.

Gaspard Gourgaud is best known for being one of Napoleon's supporters who accompanied him in exile to Saint Helena and later wrote about his time there. The son of a musician, Gourgaud enrolled in the École Polytechnique in September of 1799. Two years later he became a sous-lieutenant and he studied at the artillery school of Châlons.
